Leeward Algarve - Diving Spots
The Sotavento (Leeward) is the most Easterly diving region of the Algarve, bordering with Spain in the town of Vila Real de Santo António. The region is more heavily influenced by the winds from the North quadrant and from the Atlantic in general.
On the other hand, the Levante, the characteristic wind of this region of the Algarve, is more common during the summer, due to the high air temperatures, and it has different daily intensities.
When the Levante is strong, it can affect diving conditions, particularly when it causes heavy swell. The sea temperature varies between 14 and 15 degrees Celsius in winter and 18 to 22 degrees Celsius in summer.
It has low rainfall, even during the winter months. For the purposes of this guide, the Sotavento Zone includes the diving sites between Albufeira and Vila Real de Santo António.
